Hilary Duff has shared a gorgeous picture of herself on holiday with her son, Luca, aged 5, and in a single Instagram caption, summed up everything that is wrong with tabloid media and the social narrative surrounding body image, ‘Since websites and magazines love to share ‘celeb flaws’ – well I have them!’ she writes. Bloody brilliant!!
The age of Instagram has changed the way celebrities interact with the public and their fans, and has given them a whole new level of control over their image. Some choose to use the platform to share exclusive behind the scenes access and to curate the public view, @beyonce is of course the queen of this approach. Some, like @hilaryduff, have decided to break down the mythical wall and share a far more candid view of their world. Others expertly use the platform to satirise the absurdity of celebrity, @celestebarber please stand up! Whatever the approach, capitalising on social media and its immediacy means celebrities can bypass the traditional media relationships. With the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death approaching, we are reminded of the very worst of the intrusion these public figures face on a daily basis to feed a seemingly insatiable beast.
Hopefully, with more posts like this, over time they will remove the appeal of tabloid headlines flogging the shocking reality – ‘celeb’s, they’re just like us’. Yes, hello, they are human! As Duff rightly says, ‘My body has given me the greatest gift of my life: Luca, 5 years ago. I’m turning 30 in September and my body is healthy and gets me where I need to go.’ At a time when high definition and CGI means Hollywood can literally take decades off actors, it is as important as ever that we remind ourselves and younger generations that it is NOT reality, nor is it a bar by which we should measure ourselves. Duff encourages followers to ‘be proud of what we’ve got and stop wasting precious time in the day wishing we were different, better, and unflawed’ and it’s a message young people and women of all ages will be happy to hear!
And for those of you, like me, who are keen to know where she got her swimsuit from, it is the Anne-Marie One-piece from Solid and Striped and can be found here You’re welcome!
